Filling in Application Forms

Many organisations require applicants to fill in application forms.

These may be confusing and a great deal of attention needs to be paid to the details required to ensure they are completed correctly. If the application contains errors, it may be discarded without being considered for the post.

Key Reminders

Read through the application form prior to completion.

It is worth photocopying the application form so you can complete it in rough before completing the final draft.

Read the job description of the post you are applying for and make sure you are aware of the skills which are required

If asked to do so, use black ink and ensure the form is completed clearly and precisely

Remember that this is the first opportunity to impress potential employers

As you complete the sections of the form, don't leave any blank spaces. Write N/A (Not Applicable) where appropriate.

List your most recent education first and this will be most relevant to the application, rather than early school years.

Follow the same principle when listing any work experience

If there is a section which asks why you think you are suited to a particular role, take time to consider your answer. If answers included such things as you have the required skill level and enjoy this type of role, and the training and development associated with the role would be of great interest, then you are likely to be on the right lines. Answers revolving around money, flexi-time and holiday are unlikely to impress.

Always be honest when describing your skill level or past experience.  However, at the same time it is important to sell yourself to the organisation to which you are applying.

If you are asked to provide references, ask your chosen referee for their permission and ensure they can react quickly to requests for information.

Take the time to check spelling and grammar - it matters!

It is always useful to ask a friend to read through the application once it has been completed so they can offer constructive feedback.

Remember to sign and date your application.

It is advisable to photocopy your completed application, so if you are called to an interview, you can recall the answers you have already supplied in support of your application.
