Jobs in The Public Sector

The public sector is the most popular choice for graduates...and it’s not hard to see why. Almost six million people – one in five of all UK workers – earn their living in central and local government and associated organisations so there are plenty of jobs on the market.

Every year, the Times asks 1500 university leavers which employers they think offer the best jobs for graduates. The latest survey has four of the top ten from the public sector. As a graduate, you have delayed your arrival at the jobs market for at least three years and as a result you might be looking to the public sector for higher salaries, better prospects, the best training, good pensions, true commitment to diversity and equality, and a sensible balance of work and living.

From diplomats to drainage engineers, from social workers to strategic planners, and from teachers to tax inspectors, it is highly likely that there is a job in the public sector to suit every graduate discipline. And if the idea of serving society isn’t enough, the public sector offers some of the best working conditions around. The Prime Minister said he wants: “every element of our public services to be the best in the world”. And those services need the best graduates to meet that challenge.
