Civil servants work with the politicians of the day to formulate policies and the government’s agencies put them into practice. There are civil servants at every level, working on pensions, investigating fraud or drawing up education policy.

The Fast Stream is a graduate entry route for senior Civil Service careers in healthcare, education, democracy, unemployment, pensions, food safety and transport. You can apply for any job in the Civil Service as long as you’re a UK national or have dual nationality. Three out of four of Civil Service posts are open to Commonwealth citizens and nationals of any of the member states of the European Economic Area. Some, including most Fast Stream posts, are reserved for UK nationals. All you need is a second class degree in any subject. Unbelievable? Well, there is the small matter of a series of online tests as the first part of the application process. They are tough – but would you really want it any other way?
