DFID has committed to the internationally-agreed target of halving the number of people living in extreme poverty by 2015. Though much of their effort concentrates on Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, they also work in Central and Eastern Europe. They operate in partnership with governments, international and national non-governmental organisations, the private sector and institutions such as the World Bank, UN agencies and the EU. Over 800 of their people are overseas, with a further 1,400 at one or other of our HQ sites in central London and East Kilbride. These UK bases employ professional advisers and general administrators who support the promotion of sustainable livelihoods, better health and improved management in poorer countries.
