In May 2006, the number of full time equivalent Teachers totalled 435,400.

The number of Teachers entering the profession declined throughout the late 1980's and early 1990's. However, a number of initiatives have been introduced to attract graduates into Teaching, including Bursaries, Golden Hello's and increases to the basic level of pay.

This has resulted in the number of Teacher Trainees rising for the 5^th year running.
