To lead the People and Policy Service and as a member of the Chief Officer Management Team to lead the organisation.

Why did you join the Public Sector?

I originally joined the retail sector as a graduate trainee.  I soon realised that the best development opportunities for young graduates lay within the public sector so I switched and joined Oldham Council as a Management Services Trainee.  I have not regretted the move for a minute. 

What do you consider to be the most significant challenges in your organisation?

To deliver the highest quality of services, often  to the most vulnerable members of our society.  To ensure that we provide community leadership and develop a strong sense of pride in Buckinghamshire.  To manage the organisation effectively so that we provide excellent value for money.

What are the benefits of a Public Sector Career?

A fantastic opportunity to gain broad experience of a range of services and to experience a strong sense of pride in delivering services of true value to local communities.  Excellent benefits package including the opportunity for flexible working in many organisations.  

What advice do you have for anyone considering a career within the sector?

Be clear about why you would want to choose the public sector as a career.  Have some thoughts about what direction your career may follow so that you can exploit opportunities once you are there.  Don't be put off by the traditional image of some authorities - they can be fun places with lots of opportunity to meet new people.  Research carefully the organisation you want to work for so that you have some basic knowledge when you arrive for interview.  So many graduates I have interviewed have been unable to tell me what size of budget the authority has, how many people it employs and what its key services are.  This information is all easily accessible on the websites.
