There are 442 Local Authorities in England and Wales. - Over 20,000 elected Councillors represent local communities in the 410 Councils in England and Wales
- Local Councils take on an estimated 700 different functions.
- An estimated 400 occupations exist from planning and surveying through to Policy, Research, Waste and Finance.
- 58% of jobs within Local Government are within Education, 14% Social Services and 8% Corporate Functions.
- 22 Local Authorities in Wales are responsible for £4 billion of expenditure. 150,000 people are employed and there are 1,200 serving Councillors.
- In Scotland, there are 32 directly elected Local Authorities providing Local Services.
- In 2007 there were 578,600 people employed in the Public Sector in Scotland.
- The Public Sector accounted for 22,8% of total employment in Scotland, with the breakdown as follows: Local Government, Police & Fire 54.9%, NHS 26.6%, Civil Service 8.7%, Public Corporations 4.4%, Armed Forces 2.3%, Non Departmental Public Bodies 2.5%
