Local Government -Areas of Work
Graduate careers in the public sector are likely to fall into one of three areas:
· strategy and policy
· front-line services
· support services like HR, IT or finance
The Civil Service and Local Government offer jobs in just about every speciality you can think of. Accountants, for instance, can find jobs in departments ranging from the Home Office to the Highways Agency.
Not exotic enough? Take a look at the Central Science Laboratory in York. They have jobs for chemists, microbiologist, entomologists, and zoologists. There are even vacancies for those who specialise in acarology (the study of mites and ticks).Fancy modelling ecosystems? Then the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science will want to hear from you.
There are vacancies for Human Resources and Pensions specialists in every department. Good at communicating? Try the Central Office of Information. Prefer to keep your own counsel...there's always the Secret Intelligence Service.
Local government jobs can fall into six different areas: Building, caring for, educating, entertaining, protecting, and supporting your community. There are 8 different types of councils, all offering graduate jobs. They are county councils, district councils, London borough councils, metropolitan councils, English, Scottish and Welsh unitary councils and district councils in Northern Ireland.
